The framework at the centre of this book, zzcollab, and the argument that motivates it are developed in the accompanying methodological paper, zzcollab: A Flexible Extension of rrtools for Reproducible, Collaborative Research Compendia in R. The book draws its worked apparatus, its reproducibility-levels ladder, and its capture-versus-validation framing from that work and from the framework’s documentation.

The book stands on the shoulders of the reproducibility literature it surveys, in particular the research-compendium lineage of Gentleman and Temple Lang and of Marwick, Boettiger, and Mullen; the containerisation work of the Rocker project; and the many rules-and-practices papers cited in the chapters.
